Compare zebra and roller blinds for Malta homes. Understand daytime light control, night privacy, blackout limits and the fabric questions that matter.

A zebra blind changes the light by moving striped layers. A roller blind changes it through the fabric you choose and how far you lower it. Neither is the right answer for every room. The useful question is what you want the window to do.
How each blind works
A roller uses one panel wound around a tube. A screen fabric can filter glare and preserve some outward view; an opaque blackout fabric is intended to block light through the material. The mechanism is similar, but these fabrics serve different purposes.
A zebra uses alternating sheer and more opaque bands on two layers. Move the layers relative to each other to admit light or overlap the bands for more privacy. This gives intermediate settings without raising the complete blind. The exact result still depends on the fabric, alignment and room lighting.
For a living room: try the actual daylight
If you regularly move between television, conversation and enjoying a view, zebra can be convenient. Its bands let you adjust the room without uncovering the whole window. Decide whether you like the visible stripe pattern across your glass as well as the practical adjustment.
A screen roller offers a simpler surface and can suit a room where glare is the main problem. Test a sample from the sofa or monitor position at the time the sun causes trouble. Fabric colour and openness influence what you see; a catalogue thumbnail cannot tell you the complete result.
For night privacy: check with the lights on
A fabric that feels private in daylight may behave differently when the room is brighter than outside. A screen roller or an open zebra setting should not be treated as guaranteed night privacy. Ask the supplier what can be seen through the specific material and how it should be positioned after dark.
If privacy is essential, explain that before ordering. You may need a more opaque fabric or an additional layer. A view-preserving daytime fabric and a private night-time arrangement can be separate parts of the same window treatment.
For bedrooms: do not confuse construction with blackout
‘Zebra’ and ‘roller’ describe how a blind is made and operated. ‘Blackout’ describes a fabric property. A zebra with opaque bands is not automatically a room-darkening system, and a roller is not automatically blackout either. Specify the intended use rather than relying on the product name.
For daytime sleep, compare a suitable blackout roller and its mounting with any proposed alternative. Ask about side gaps, top coverage and handles. Our blackout options explain the starting point; the final fit needs a measurement.
For doors and busy windows: think beyond the fabric
Check whether the blind clears handles, opens with the window and leaves a practical route to the balcony. A very wide opening may need more than one unit or a different system. Ask the fitter to show the proposed divisions before you choose.
Maintenance also matters. Zebra has delicate sheer bands; roller fabrics vary in their coatings and cleaning instructions. Ask to see the care sheet for your sample and the operating instructions. Where children use the room, confirm suitable controls and installation.
A simple way to decide
Choose zebra when adjustable banded light control and its striped appearance suit the room. Choose a screen roller when a clean surface and filtered daylight matter. Consider a blackout roller when light through the fabric is the main concern, then plan the edge coverage separately.

Frequently asked questions
Do zebra blinds give night privacy?
It depends on the fabric, closed-band alignment and lighting. Check the actual sample with the room lit, rather than assuming every zebra blind gives the same privacy.
Which is cheaper, zebra or roller?
Compare written quotes for the same opening and specification. Fabric, size, mechanism and fitting can change the total.
Are all roller blinds blackout?
No. Roller blinds can use screen, light-filtering or blackout fabrics. Specify the property you need.
