How to clean blinds: a practical guide for Malta homes

4 min read · by The Home Gallery team

Learn how to dust roller, zebra and Venetian blinds, when a damp cloth is suitable and what to check before cleaning a delicate or coated fabric.

Dust on a blind is easy to ignore until the afternoon light catches it. The safest place to start is the fabric’s care instructions, not a bucket of water. A roller coating, delicate sheer and aluminium slat can need very different treatment.

First, identify what you are cleaning

Check the order details or ask your supplier for the fabric reference and care sheet. ‘Roller’ describes a mechanism; it does not tell you whether the material is washable. Blackout coatings, glued seams, printed finishes and sheer layers may react differently to moisture or detergent.

Inspect the blind before you start. A torn edge, fraying band or loose bracket needs attention before cleaning. For powered blinds, follow the manufacturer’s isolation instructions and keep moisture away from motors and controls. Do not dismantle a blind or electrical fitting just to reach a mark.

The manufacturer care guides linked below are general cross-checks, not instructions for every fabric we supply. Always use the care sheet for your own product.

Start with the fabric care sheet

Find the fabric reference and its care sheet.

Identify the fabric, dust gently and use water only if permitted.

A gentle routine for roller blinds

Lower the blind enough to reach the fabric safely. Support it and remove loose dust with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. A soft brush vacuum attachment may be suitable if the care instructions allow it; use gentle suction and avoid pulling the fabric into the nozzle.

If spot cleaning is permitted, test an inconspicuous area first. Use the recommended solution on the cloth, rather than spraying the blind. Blot lightly, do not scrub, and let the material dry fully before rolling it up. If the care sheet is missing, stay with dry dusting and ask us before using water.

Zebra and sheer blinds need a lighter touch

Zebra blinds have alternating bands and two fabric layers. Support each reachable area gently so that you do not stretch a sheer band or disturb its alignment. Work slowly with a dry soft cloth; do not drag across the mesh, twist the fabric or force the roller.

For vertical sheer fabrics, follow the care instructions for that exact collection. Do not assume a fabric can go into a washing machine because it looks like a curtain. If panels are removable, ask the supplier how they should be detached and refitted before attempting it.

Venetian slats: dust first, then check the finish

Tilt the slats so that you can wipe them gently in one direction, supporting them to prevent bending. Turn them the other way and repeat. A slightly damp cloth may suit some aluminium or synthetic finishes, but timber, tapes and decorative coatings can need different care. Never soak the complete blind or leave water in the headrail.

Avoid the shortcuts that cause damage

Do not use steam, bleach, abrasive pads or an untested household stain remover. Keep the mechanism dry. Avoid leaning out of a window, balancing on furniture or pulling hard on a chain to expose a difficult patch. If you cannot reach safely, stop and arrange suitable help.

Make a short dusting check part of your normal cleaning routine, then adjust the frequency to what actually builds up in your room. Kitchens, open windows and busy roads can change how quickly a blind needs attention. There is no single cleaning schedule that suits every home.

Choosing a blind that is easier to maintain

Before ordering, ask to see the care sheet alongside the sample. Tell us if the window sits near a cooker, is used frequently for ventilation or is difficult to access. A fabric described as wipe-clean still needs its own instructions; do not infer waterproofing or mould resistance from the description.

Explore our fabric collections or book a free measurement to discuss a practical replacement. For an existing blind, send a photo and its fabric code on WhatsApp. We can help identify the next step; a photo alone cannot confirm that a stain is removable.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash roller blinds in a bath?

Do not soak a roller blind unless its manufacturer explicitly permits it. Water can damage coatings and mechanisms.

Can I use a damp cloth on zebra blinds?

Only if the specific fabric care instructions permit it. Start with gentle dry dusting and avoid stretching sheer bands.

How often should I clean blinds?

Check them during normal cleaning and adjust the routine to the dust in your room and the manufacturer’s care advice.
